“And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.” 1 John 5:11-12
I was in an Olive Garden restaurant a few years ago and had decided that I was just going to have the soup, salad and breadsticks for my meal. When it came my turn, i placed my order, choosing the Chicken and Gnocchi soup, and requested that my soup be served at the same time the others received their meals.
For those who don’t know what gnocchi are, I’ll explain. Gnocchi are small Italian dumplings made from potato, flour and various other ingredients. When cooked correctly they’re very soft and lite, taking on the flavors of whatever soup or sauce they’re served with. I like them.
A few minutes after ordering we were served our drinks, salads, and breadsticks and after enjoying these our meals arrived. As I looked down at my bowl of soup I noticed something a bit disappointing about it. There was no gnocchi in my Chicken and Gnocchi soup.
I gave the soup a stir to make sure it wasn’t hiding one somewhere and confirmed that it was gnocchi-less. Since I knew that the gnocchi wasn’t a major player in the flavor of the soup I wasn’t overly concerned about whether or not the soup would taste good. It did however strike me as being a little humorous and with mock dismay I commented on its absence to my neighbor. We both chuckled and began to enjoy our meals. But apparently, our waitress overheard and, even though I hadn’t asked, decided the oversight needed correcting because before I’d eaten half my bowl she placed other bowl next to my first, this one with several of the dumplings floating in the creamy soup.
I thanked her warmly and with a smile she said, “You can’t have Chicken and Gnocchi soup without gnocchi.”
In nearly every dish there are essential ingredients. Ones where if you don’t have them you don’t have the dish.
When it comes to the dish we call Life, our focus text points out that there’s an essential ingredient that must be added to our mix. We must have Jesus. Without him we don’t have Life. The apostle John said it this way, “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
If you’ve been trying to get your life right and you keep coming up disappointed with the results you’re getting maybe the essential ingredient your lacking is Jesus. Ask him to be part of your life then let him influence everything you do. You’ll find that it makes all the difference.
