“But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.” Mark 9:42
Which do you think is of greater importance to God, his personal honor and majesty or the salvation and welfare of his children?
Before we go any further I think it’s appropriate to observe that both God’s honor and the welfare of his children are important to God. The Ten Commandments illustrate this point because in them we see both areas addressed as matters of moral significance. So I’m not suggesting that one area is important while the other is not. What I’m asking is this, if you asked God to chose between these two monumentally important things; either maintaining the honor of his name or the wellbeing of his children, which would he pick?
I believe that our focus text, along with the consistent testimony of all of scripture, demonstrates that our Heavenly Father would chose us over himself every single time.
If you have a hard time with this assertion consider this; the Old Testament is all preparatory to the giving of Christ in the New Testament and the giving of Christ is an action where God is placing the beloved Son in great jeopardy as he submits himself in servile humility all for the salvation of people that would kill him.
Why would he do this? Because God is love and he loves us.
As I’ve already mentioned both God’s honor and our salvation and welfare are important. Scripture demonstrates the importance of both. And Satan would use those passages where God strives to impress upon his people the importance of honoring him to paint a picture of God where he is selfish, exacting and unloving. But that is really Satan presenting a description of his own heart and then calling it God’s.
If God could he would destroy himself for us. That’s how great his love is. But he can’t. He created us to need him as our God. Nothing can exist without him. So if he were to end so would everything else. His only choice then is to try to convince us of what’s in his heart when he thinks of us. Our focus text tells us that he has very loving and protective thoughts for all his vulnerable children.
